We live on the island of Cozumel and have an opportunity to visit all the beaches on the island on a regular basis BUT after 6 months here we definitely have our favorites! We have 5 kids ranging from 2 years old to 12 years old so we have to cater to younger children when it comes to water safety. We have a 2 year old that is not scared of the water at all and would follow anyone to the deep end trying to hold his breath the entire way. Which is why we love the North Side of Chen Rio. Chen Rio is located on the East side of Cozumel. You can get there by driving from Downtown San Miguel directly east on the transversal highway. It takes approximately 15-20 minutes in a car and 20-25 minutes on a scooter. The East side of the island is limited when looking for places to eat so I would suggest packing a lunch. Restaurants are few and far between. There is, however, and restaurant at Chen Rio, but you can’t watch kids play in the water and eat at the same time, they are too far apart.
For small children Chen Rio is perfect because approximately 30 feet off the beach there is a rock wall that blocks the waves and makes for calm swim area. The depth is around 2-3 feet, making it easy for kids to play with out worrying if they are headed toward deeper water. The sand is amazing! On the West side of the island sandy beaches are hard to come by. The snorkeling at Chen Rio is not ideal, but for a child it’s a great place to learn to use a mask and snorkel away from waves and rough coral.
So next time you are in Cozumel be sure to enjoy Chen Rio!
